Responding to Anti-Semitism and Anti-Asian Racism
As the Pastor of WCC on behalf of our entire Leadership Team We condemn racism in all its forms, especially as directed against our Jewish and Asian, Canadian communities.
We grieve and mourn the continued racism against all people. But Specifically, we are saddened by the rise in the verbal and physical attacks on Jewish and Asian Canadians at this time. We acknowledge that recent incidents in Canada and the United States have occurred within a growing context of Anti-Semitism and anti-Asian racism and violence.
When we Consider the upcoming centenary of Canada’s Exclusion Act (1923), we condemn these activities in Canada and around the world.
WE ARE ALARMED BY THE RISE IN ANTISEMITISM IN CANADA OVER RECENT DAYS. WE STAND WITH THE JEWISH COMMUNITY IN CONDEMNING THESE ACTS OF HATE AND INTIMIDATION. ANTISEMITISM HAS NO PLACE IN CANADA.
In Canada…we have been seeing
Jews being pelted with stones on the streets in Montreal. Pro-Palestinian “activists” driving through Jewish neighbourhoods in Edmonton demanding to know “where do the Jews live.” Armed anti-Israel thugs arrested in Cote-Saint Luc (a Jewish neighbourhood in greater Montreal). We see Students at Wilfrid Laurier University posting videos of themselves stabbing the air at an Israeli flag. Jewish businesses defaced in Halifax and targeted across the country. And we continue to see Jewish Canadians harassed relentlessly on social media.
Anti-Asian racist incidents have grown at unprecedented rates since 2020. Asian Heritage Month reminds us of both the contributions made by the Asian communities and of sad historical realities such as the Head Tax, the Vancouver Anti-Asian Riots of 1907,
Anti-Asian rhetoric and violence amplified by COVID-19 also remind us that Asian women and seniors continue to be disproportionately affected by
incidents of racism.
We stand with our Jewish and
Asian communities. We see and affirm the anger, grief, pain, and fear of These Canadian families.
As A Jewish Christian leader, we categorically condemn the sin of racism. We acknowledge that racism may take many forms, from overt violence and verbal threats to marginalization and discriminatory words.
We commit ourselves to challenge all forms of racism and discrimination. We
must continue to work together to build a just and caring British Columbia and Canada for
ourselves and for future generations.
Dear Westwood Family let’s renew our commitment to rectify racial and socio-economic inequities in every way possible raising our voices when we are a witness to the ugliness of Racism.
